20. Jahrhundert: 1945 bis heute | Nachkriegszeit
A New Beginning
The Allies set the tone for political reconstruction in post-war Germany. In the Soviet occupation zone, it is especially communists loyal to Moscow who are placed in key positions. The Western occupation authorities rely on "white lists" to find trustworthy people. In spring 1946, the Germans are finally given the right to vote freely again for the first time. And there is also a cultural new beginning. The German people long for distraction from their barren lives and daily misery, seeking culture and entertainment. In the DEFA studios in Berlin-Babelsberg, production of cinema films and newsreels restarts. Politically committed directors make coming to terms with the Nazi era an issue for a mass audience. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated.
