20. Jahrhundert: 1945 bis heute | Aufarbeitung des Nationalsozialismus
Guilt and Atonement
With the collapse of the Nazi Reich, any form of Führer cult is to vanish from the German peoples’ minds. Denazification is the order of the day. However, in the American and British zones it is easy to circumvent denazification proceedings with a "Persilschein" (denazification certificate). Unlike in the East, where the Soviet military administration systematically excludes all National Socialists from public office and the judiciary. Those arrested are interned in former concentration camps. In November 1945, high-ranking officials of the Nazi regime finally face trial in Nuremberg. For the first time in history, high-ranking politicians, business and military leaders are put on trial – charged with instigating a war of aggression and crimes against humanity. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated.
