Revolutions – Definitions and Basic Concepts

"Liberty, equality, fraternity" – revolutions always come with big words and great visions. Injustices are to be put to an end by creating an entirely new political and social order. Old elites have to give way, and, in many cases, violence is used to do so. New elites often see themselves entitled to impose their ideals with all their might. If necessary, progress and virtue are to be ensured by terror. This is what happens in the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century, when bourgeois revolutionaries initially turn against the outdated monarchical orders. Later, in the industrial age, communism becomes the purpose of revolutionary upheavals, as in Russia in 1917. At the end of the 20th century, communist orders themselves are eliminated by overthrows, as in the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR in 1989. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated. mehr weniger
