The American Revolution of 1776

"We the People" – these are the first and maybe most important words of the American Constitution, as it states for the first time that sovereignty lies with the people and not with a king. The secession of what will later become the USA from Great Britain begins a few years earlier with the "Boston Tea Party". It is triggered by a dispute over more taxes and higher tariffs, which Britain demands from the colonies. However, there is to be no more political co-determination in return. The ensuing American Revolutionary War is won by the colonists, who declare their independence in 1776. The new state defines all people to be equal – a revolution. Initially, however, only white men holding property are considered equal citizens. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated. mehr weniger
