The Peace Movement
After a phase of détente, the super powers in both East and West rearm at the end of the 1970s. In order to prevent future wars through a "balance of terror", medium-range nuclear missiles are deployed all over Europe. Many citizens of the FRG are appalled by this. They demand an end to the armament race and a nuclear-free Europe. In mass protests and at missile bases such as the US military base in Mutlangen, hundreds of thousands demonstrate peacefully and without violence. Many Germans in the GDR are also committed to peace. The Bible saying "Swords into Ploughshares" becomes the motto of the GDR peace movement, which is closely monitored by the Stasi and yet develops more and more into a political protest movement. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated.
