The fall of the Wall on November 9, 1989 marks the end of the SED dictatorship. For 40 years, the communist rule in East Germany had held. But now even the powerful secret service Stasi can no longer break the resistance of the GDR’s citizens. A wave of emigration had already clearly shown the general discontent. Now, in autumn 1989, more and more people take to the streets at weekly "Monday Demonstrations", demanding freedom and democracy: "We are the people!" After the fall of the Wall, the call for reunification dominates: "We are one people!" German unity can no longer be delayed.
