The Thirty Years’ War 1618-1648
The Defenestration of Prague in 1618 marks the beginning of a war that keeps Europe in thrall for 30 years. It is a bloody fight for the religious order and power-political interests within the Holy Roman Empire. Numerous European states are directly or indirectly involved. The mercenaries’ training and warfare are mostly undertaken by private military entrepreneurs, for whom war is a profitable business. For the population, however, it is a catastrophe. Mercenaries roam the country robbing and murdering. There is plundering, rape and orgies of violence.
