20. Jahrhundert: 1914-1945 | Weimarer Republik
Years of Crisis
"Long live the new. Long live the German Republic!" Philipp Scheidemann proclaims on November 9th, 1918. The Kaiser abdicates. At first, it is unclear whether the result of the November Revolution will be a parliamentary democracy or a soviet republic, as demanded by radical left-wing forces. The country is torn apart. Many former front-line soldiers join right-wing Freikorps which take brutal action against political opponents. The period is marked by uprisings, putsch attempts and political murders. In the Ruhrkampf, the people of the Ruhr area fight against the French and Belgian occupation. Hyperinflation devalues all money. In 1924, the chaotic early years come to an end. Hope is starting to rise.
