Economy in Upheaval
In the 1970s and 1980s, both German states face new economic challenges. In the Federal Republic, the years of the economic miracle are over due to the 1973 oil crisis and structural change. Old industries such as steel and coal – once the black gold of the Ruhr area – are in decline. Subsidies and social plans for workers cannot prevent more than 2 million unemployed in the early 1980s. In the GDR, by contrast, there is full employment – officially. Yet labour productivity is low, many factories obsolete and the economy inefficient. Accelerated by an expensive social policy, the state is finally insolvent in 1982. Only billions in West German loans can help, but the citizens’ discontent with the SED regime grows. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated.
