Germany and the Cold War
Two new states are formed on German soil in 1949: the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. Their foundation occurs at a time when Europe develops into a hotspot of the Cold War, making Germany one of the fronts between the power blocs. Under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, the FRG relies on its protection by integrating into the Western military alliance NATO – and on rearmament. The founding of the Bundeswehr, however, meets with great social protest. But the East also rearms: The GDR becomes a member of the Warsaw Pact and establishes the National People’s Army in 1956. Ever more weapons are now also positioned on German territory.
