Terror and Persecution

In 1921, the SA (Sturmabteilung) is founded as a paramilitary protection force of the NSDAP and henceforth used to intimidate political opponents. The "Brownshirts" engage in bloody hall and street fighting, especially with the communist Front Fighters’ League (Frontkämpferbund). After the National Socialists seize power in 1933, the SA becomes even more aggressive – not only against Jewish citizens. Numerous political opponents are now arrested, tortured and put into makeshift concentration camps. Just as brutal as the fight against political rivals is the struggle for power within the Nazis’ own ranks. In June 1934, as part of the so-called Röhm Putsch, Hitler has various SA leaders murdered. Henceforth, the SS (Schutzstaffel) becomes the most powerful terrorist organ of the state. mehr weniger
