20. Jahrhundert: 1945 bis heute | Friedliche Revolution 1989/90
The Economy
In July 1990, Chancellor Helmut Kohl promises the GDR citizens "flourishing landscapes in which it is worthwhile to live and work", when introducing the monetary, economic and social union. This is intended to be an important step towards reunification and the harmonisation of East and West German living conditions. A package worth billions is raised for the reconstruction of East Germany. But for many people, the great enthusiasm is quickly followed by disillusionment. The Trust Agency (Treuhandanstalt) is to administer the privatisation of former GDR state-owned enterprises, but it is fuelling a sell-out mood. In addition, more than one million people lose their jobs within two years. Anger and disappointment spread. For many, politics has failed. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated.
