The First World War – the Modern War
"I know no parties any more – only Germans," declares Kaiser Wilhelm II at the beginning of the war. A "Burgfrieden" (party truce) is to put aside all internal conflicts to make victory possible. The German soldiers storm into France via neutral Belgium. The enthusiasm is great, the disillusionment soon even greater. The war congeals in the trenches. In static warfare, modern technology such as the use of gas destroys the lives of millions of soldiers on all sides. At home in Germany, famine reigns. Finally, the USA’s entry into the war brings about the decision. Germany has to admit defeat, which brings an end to the Reich.
