However, not as a result of one of the many murderous battles, but after a negotiation marathon of five years – the first wide-ranging peace congress in history. Never has war been ended at the negotiating table before. Now, more than 100 delegations from all over Europe are haggling over political, territorial and confessional points of contention. "Forgive and forget" is the key principle, with war atrocities not being avenged.
