The Stasi and its Files
While people are celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall in the streets on November 9, 1989, the State Security Service (Stasi) is covering its tracks and secretly destroying evidence. It had ensured the omnipotence of the SED through a gigantic surveillance apparatus for almost 40 years. Now, all documents on how the GDR regime intimidated, suppressed and persecuted its citizens are to disappear. It is thanks to citizens’ committees that not all of the files are shredded. In the winter of 1989/90, they occupy the district Stasi headquarters everywhere, including Leipzig. Today it is home to the "Runde Ecke" museum, which offers an insight into the Ministry of State Security’s history and work of its full-time agents and unofficial collaborators. | In this film version, German interviews and historical or literary quotes remain untranslated.
