The Way out of Dictatorship
For a long time, all opposition in the GDR is silenced – spied on, monitored, locked away. But in 1989, many people no longer let themselves be intimidated. Small protests turn into mass demonstrations. 70,000 people gather in Leipzig on October 9, 500,000 in East Berlin on November 4, demanding free democratic elections and substantial political reforms. Tens of thousands leave the country heading west. As the Egon Krenz government finally announces more liberal travel regulations on November 9, the inner-German border is opened due to a throng of people that very night. The Wall comes down, 40 years of SED dictatorship are over.
