20. Jahrhundert: 1914-1945 | Weimarer Republik
Collapse
"I have made it my aim to sweep the thirty parties out of Germany," Adolf Hitler threatens in 1932. The world economic crisis brings him very close to this goal. At times almost six million Germans are unemployed. Social benefits are cut to a minimum. The country is governed by emergency decree. The US stock market crash of 1929 had caused much-needed American loans to be withdrawn. Distress and crisis are the perfect electoral aids for the NSDAP, which becomes the strongest party. On January 30th, 1933, Reich President Hindenburg appoints Adolf Hitler as Reich Chancellor. The Weimar Republic has come to an end.
