Youth
As of 1933, the German youth is brought up and educated in accordance with the Nazi spirit. Heredity and race studies are now added to the school curriculum. The pupils are to learn who makes up the Volksgemeinshaft and who does not. Aryan pupils become racial role models, while Jewish pupils are ostracised and presented as inferior. In their free time, the young are organised in the Hitler Jugend (HJ) or the Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM). Community spirit and camaraderie inspire many, but the downside is drill and obedience. Those who are non-conformist and rebellious live dangerously. Many members of opposition youth groups were persecuted – including the so-called "Edelweiss Pirates".
